IBERFOIL, a aluminium foil company, welcomed the Vice President of the Government of Aragón, Mar Vaquero, and the Director General for Economic Policy, Javier Martínez Suárez, to its plant in Sabiñánigo, Huesca.

They were joined by the Chairman of IBERFOIL and ALIBERICO, Clemente González Soler; Corporate Director, María González Armero; and the General Manager of the plant, Pedro María Jiménez Gastón. Together, they toured the facilities to see firsthand the successive innovation and process improvement projects carried out by IBERFOIL in recent years.

Since becoming part of ALIBÉRICO in 2014, IBERFOIL has invested over 70 million euros aimed at increasing production capacity, improving processes with a focus on efficiency and sustainability, and expanding its product range.

Currently, the IBERFOIL plant in Sabiñánigo spans 155,000 square meters and is the only one in Spain specialized in the production of thin aluminium foil, especially for the food and pharmaceutical sectors, making it a strategic asset for the country.

The company processes 60,000 tons of aluminium per year, including 20,000 tons of thin-gauge aluminium and 40,000 tons of thicker gauges. Its coil range includes thicknesses from 6 microns to 6 millimeters and widths up to 1,700 millimeters.

IBERFOIL exports over 70% of its production. Its client portfolio includes major multinational companies in the food and pharmaceutical industries, operating in over 20 countries.

Alongside increased production capacity, its workforce has continued to grow, now totaling 160 employees and creating over 400 indirect jobs in auxiliary companies.

IBERFOIL INTEGRA: A Circular Economy Model in Spain

The delegation paid special attention to the new factory facilities under the IBERFOIL INTEGRA project, where ALIBÉRICO has invested over 48 million euros in the past three years. This industrial initiative is pioneering in Spain and Europe and serves as a benchmark for the Circular Economy model.

IBERFOIL INTEGRA occupies 45,000 square meters within the same industrial complex in Sabiñánigo. Its main activities are scrap recovery, smelting, and the production of 6 mm thick coils through continuous casting.

The new plant recovers aluminium scrap from IBERFOIL and ALIBERICO’s other 16 plants in Spain, as well as from customers, using five furnaces. In the future, these furnaces will be capable of using up to 100% hydrogen as fuel, significantly reducing or eliminating CO2 emissions from the aluminium industry’s traditional processes.

Using this scrap, IBERFOIL INTEGRA produces 50,000 tons of green aluminium coils per year. The project, declared of regional interest by the Government of Aragón, has created 40 new direct jobs, adding to IBERFOIL’s existing workforce of 120.

This new plant supplies green aluminium to all ALIBERICO plants, particularly those in Alcalá de Henares, Miranda de Ebro, Linares, and Alicante, granting the Group complete independence in raw material supply.

Mar Vaquero: « A benefit to society that we must all support and preserve »

During the visit, the Vice President and Minister of Presidency, Economy and Justice, Mar Vaquero, emphasized the « high economic, industrial and social value » of IBERFOIL. “Having a company of this scale in the region is a benefit to society that we must all support and preserve,” she said, noting that “it creates dozens of jobs in rural areas and many families have built their lives around it, allowing them to remain in this part of the Huesca province.”

She also stressed that IBERFOIL’s example demonstrates that « success and national and international leadership can be achieved from the region. » This is because “products for various sectors are manufactured here, activities are diversified to ensure the present and future, and the facilities are unique in the world, placing Sabiñánigo at the forefront of a highly competitive sector.”
